Acomb's Front Street has undergone a vibrant transformation, celebrating community spirit and artistic expression. On Saturday, March 22nd, a stunning new mural was unveiled, marking the completion of the second phase of regeneration on the street. The artwork, commissioned by City of York Council, was brought to life by Art of Protest Projects, a York-based company.
The unveiling was a community event, attended by the Lord Mayor of York, members of City of York Council, and the Steering Group from the Greater Acomb Community Forum. The mural project also include the upcycling of eight benches, each adorned with unique artwork.
This phase of work, which began in October, also addressed previous concerns regarding the abundance of bollards that were installed along Front Street in January 2023. Following local backlash, the council has removed 90 of the original 131 bollards, creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment. These changes have been met with a positive response from residents, who have been seen stopping to admire the mural and enjoy the revitalized streetscape.
Art of Protest Projects' commitment to the community went beyond just painting the mural. They actively engaged with residents through 17 community sessions in local hubs and four local schools. They even launched a "Street Art Academy," providing residents with the opportunity to learn new artistic skills.
Adding another layer of symbolism and local pride, a new sign has been erected near the mural, welcoming visitors to Front Street. The sign features a heart-shaped acorn design, a creation by Luke Walker, a local graphic designer and chairperson of the Greater Acomb Community Forum. The acorn serves as a nod to the Old English word "acum," meaning "at the oak trees," which is believed to be the origin of Acomb's name.
"I wanted to make a unifying symbol for the community of Acomb," explained Walker, a 26-year-old graphic designer who has called Acomb home since he was three. "I want to say, 'This is our symbol, we can wear it proud.'"
Luke Walker emphasizes the importance of Front Street as a focal point of community life in Acomb. "Front Street is where the community comes together. It’s all about community in Acomb… people look after each other." He hopes that the mural will serve as a source of inspiration for young people in Acomb for generations to come, fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging creative expression within the community.
Through vibrant art, community engagement, and a celebration of local heritage, the reimagined Front Street is poised to become a thriving hub for Acomb, solidifying its reputation as a place where people come together and support one another.
