The new Acomb Repair Café opened its doors for the first time on Saturday, September 27th, 2023, at the Acomb Methodist Church on Front Street, welcoming an incredible turnout of residents eager to give their broken household items a new lease on life.
The inaugural event saw a bustling atmosphere as skilled volunteer repairers tackled a variety of items, including sewing and knitwear, jewellery, glasses, bikes, electrical appliances, and miscellaneous items needing mending or glueing. Attendees were delighted to see their beloved possessions fixed at no charge, contributing to the event's overwhelming success and positive community spirit.
Acomb Repair Café is a volunteer-run initiative dedicated to preventing waste, sharing valuable repair knowledge, helping residents save money, and fostering stronger community ties. Beyond the repairs, the café also offered a welcoming space where visitors could enjoy tea, coffee, and cake, further enhancing the friendly, community-focused atmosphere.
We are absolutely thrilled with the incredible turnout at our first event. It's clear there's a real enthusiasm in Acomb for practical solutions to waste, for learning new skills, and for coming together as a community. We saw so many smiles as items were given a new lease on life, and we couldn't be more grateful to our dedicated volunteers and the supportive community.
Following this successful debut, Acomb Repair Café is excited to announce its next two events:
- Saturday, November 15th, 2025
- Saturday, January 17th, 2026
Both events will run at the Acomb Methodist Church on Front Street. While the volunteers can’t promise to fix every item, they will always do their best to help. There is no charge for repairs, but donations are warmly welcomed to help support future events and cover operating costs.
Residents are encouraged to bring their broken household items and join the effort to reduce waste, learn valuable repair skills, and connect with their neighbours.
